Understanding Missouri’s Point System
Missouri uses a point-based system to monitor traffic violations. Each traffic offense adds points to your driving record, and accumulating too many can result in serious penalties.
The point system works in the following manner.
- 4 points in 12 months: You will receive an advisory letter from the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) as a warning.
- 8 points in 18 months: Your license will be suspended:
- 1st suspension lasts 30 days.
- 2nd suspension lasts 60 days.
- 3rd or subsequent suspensions last 90 days.
- 12 points in 12 months, 18 points in 24 months, or 24 points in 36 months will result in a one-year license revocation.
When your driving privileges are reinstated after a suspension or revocation, the points on your record are reduced to four.
From there, points decrease over time, provided you maintain a clean record:
- 1 year of violation-free driving reduces points by one-third.
- 2 years of violation-free driving reduces points by half.
- 3 years without violations reduces your points to zero.
However, some serious violations may remain on your record permanently.
