Trucking Accidents

Trucking Accidents

There are accidents on the highway daily. However, it is common sense that the danger from semi-trucks and other large freight vehicles poses an even greater threat to the common commuter. The average vehicle weighs less than two tons, while the common commercial tractor-trailer truck weighs about 40 tons. Your family car or SUV is not going to stand up too well to those odds in an accident.

Obviously if and when vehicles collide with passenger automobiles major serious damage and often life-threatening injuries can occur. It is not hard to understand that the biggest loser in this situation is the passenger car involved.

In keeping with the U.S. department of Transportation’s Fatality evaluation Reporting system (FARS), in a recent year, 4,136 lives were lost in big truck crashes, 31 percent more than just a few years ago. This problem is not getting better.

You may be surprised to know that in 2018, occupants of cars and passenger vehicles accounted for 67 percent of fatalities in accidents involving trucks and passenger vehicles.

Even with many government regulations limiting the number of hours that a truck driver can be on the road, the demand employers place on their drivers to deliver on time often result in them breaking these rules. Truck drivers who continue to drive through the night without enough sleep will generally become drowsy and ultimately unable to safely navigate the vehicle

In addition to sleepy drivers, common causes of truck accidents include:

  • Mechanical  mistakes
  • Incorrect freight loading
  • Not securing freight properly
  • Operator inexperience
  • Distracted driving
  • Neglectful maintenance of the truck
  • Inclement weather driving
  • Speeding
  • Negligent driving
  • Unfamiliarity with the road
  • Intoxication

It does not matter what the reason is for the accident. If you are not at fault, you should not have to pay for the major damage,  and resulting expense to you.  You should hold those responsible accountable and receive compensation for your loss and trouble.

Those liable for these accidents may include the following:
  • Truck driver
  • Parent company
  • Vehicle manufacturer
  • Truck repair shops
  • A third party (such as another car that cut off the truck)
  • A local municipality such as a county or state
